It is with great joy that A Gentil Carioca announces the open call for ABRE ALAS 20 - 2024/2025, with the aim of encouraging new artists from different Brazilian states and from abroad, who can apply by submitting their proposals in accordance with this application.
1. ABOUT THE APPLICATION
1.1 – The application is open for proposals by artists and/or collectives interested in exhibiting their works and/or experiences in a group exhibition at the A Gentil Carioca headquarters, until 10 November 2024;
1.2 – Proposals will be assessed and a selection is made by guest curators invited by A Gentil Carioca. The list of selected artists will be published by 18 December 2024;
1.3 – The application is open to Brazilian or foreign artists who are not currently represented by other Brazilian commercial galleries;
1.4 – Artists who were selected in previous editions of Abre Alas are not allowed to apply; 1.5 – Submitting a proposal is free and must be done through the following online form: (https://forms.gle/iypeTy8PWYeJNLw5A);
1.5.1 – To complete your application, the following documents must be attached:
I) A short and objective proposal, specifying the work(s) that will form part of the group exhibition with the selected artists. Entries of up to 3 works per artist and/or collective are accepted, and the proposal may be partially or entirely approved by the evaluation committee.
The document(s) must also include a description of the necessary equipment or specific materials in the case of installations or multimedia works, and/or a description of its installation. The file should be named in the following way: [Name of artist/collective_ProjectTitle]. It should be sent as a pdf of maximum 10MB;
II) A portfolio by the artist and/or collective. This document must succinctly present a CV of one page, along with a selection of the works produced throughout the trajectory of the artist and/or collective. The file should be named in the following way: [Name of artist/collective_Portfolio]. It should be sent as a pdf of maximum 10MB;
III) Portfolio of works, presenting a selection of artworks available for sale.The file should be named in the following way: [Name of artist/ collective_Portfolio Available Works]. It should be sent as a pdf of up to 10 pages of maximum 10MB;
IV) A mini-bio of the artist and/or collective of maximum 500 characters in PDF format, containing their research and/or the narrative of their trajectory, relevant activities of the last three years, and whether any works are part of a collection;
V) Complete address (including country, state, city, street, etc.), phone number, e-mail address, social media handles.
2. ABOUT THE PROPOSALS
2.1 – Artists can apply with works in any media (video, painting, sculpture, photography, performance, installation, etc.) as long as the proposals can be adapted to the A Gentil Carioca exhibition space;
2.2 – Artists are responsible for the costs and resources needed for the production, transportation, exhibition, and packaging of their works (both delivery and collection). The gallery does not provide TV monitors or sound equipment. If the work requires any such equipment, it is the responsibility of the artist; 2.3 – The specific use of the exhibition space is the responsibility of the application evaluation committee, together with the gallery’s board of directors. After the selection of proposals is made, they will decide on the design of the space.
3. ABOUT THE SELECTION
3.1 – Only selected artists and/or collectives will be notified by e-mail;
3.2 – Applications can exclusively be submitted using the form specified in this open call;

4. ABOUT THE SELECTION CRITERIA
4.1 – Up to 25 artists and/or collectives will be selected to take part in the group exhibition held at A Gentil Carioca’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro;
4.2 – Artists/collectives who are represented by other Brazilian commercial galleries are disqualified.
5. ABOUT THE SELECTED ARTISTS
5.1 – To evaluate the possibility of assuming further activities, one of the selection criteria is the artist(s) agreement not to sign with any other Brazilian commercial gallery for a period of 180 (a hundred and eighty) days after the closure of the 20TH ABRE ALAS EXHIBITION;
5.1.1 – If the artist and/or collective decides to sign an agreement with another (Brazilian or foreign) gallery after the exhibition period has concluded, A Gentil Carioca must be notified in advance, because it has the first right to represent the artist;
5.2 – The work(s) included in the proposal must be available for sale and the application must include the price. In case of sale, 50% will go to the artist and 50% to the gallery;
5.3 – The selected works will be exhibited at the gallery’s headquarters with an opening date scheduled for February 22, 2025;
5.4 – The project does NOT include a fee for the artists;
5.5 – Costs and resources needed for the production, transportation, exhibition, and packaging of the works are the sole responsibility of the artist;
5.6 – A Gentil Carioca gallery will provide staff to install the works, organize the opening event, and communication;
5.7 – After being selected, the artist has until 15 January 2025 to send the necessary information for publication and communication purposes: a synopsis of the work, and high resolution image(s) with complete caption(s) and credit line(s);
5.7.1 – The SYNOPSIS for the publication has a maximum of 700 characters and is a description of the work from the artist’s point of view, detailing the thought behind it, references, and any other information that helps to compose the idea/concept of the work;
5.7.2 – IMAGES must have a minimum of 300 dpi and must be accompanied by the photographer’s credit line, if applicable;
5.7.3 – The technical CAPTION must follow this order: name of the artist and/ or collective, year of production, title of work, edition (if applicable), dimensions (height x length x depth + weight);
5.8 – After the result is announced, the works must be delivered between January 20 to 3 February 2025 at the address the gallery will provide. The works must be in perfect condition;
5.8.1 – Transportation of the works, both delivery and collection, is the sole responsibility of the artist, as well as any other transport that may be needed for the installation/deinstallation of the work at the A Gentil Carioca space;
5.8.2 – Works must be removed from the gallery within 10 calendar days after the completion of the deinstallation of the exhibition. After that period A Gentil Carioca is no longer responsible for its storage; 5.8.3 – If shipping of the works is required, postal costs are the sole responsibility of the artist and/or collective.
