All About Curating
Gropius Bau
Located in the heart of Berlin, the Gropius Bau is a vibrant hub for encounters with art and with one another. This internationally renowned exhibition venue is part of the Berlin Festival and offers space for major exhibitions and performances by contemporary artists – thus providing new perspectives on the here and now. Exchange, discussion, and the convergence of local and global perspectives characterize its program.
Artists are at the heart of this project: they not only exhibit their own work, but also curate exhibitions or work for several years in one of the studios on the second floor. This creates a model for how institutions in the 21st century can be shaped from within by artistic ideas.
Above all, the game serves as a suggestion for how we can interact with each other in times of increasing social tension: openly instead of judgmentally, together instead of against each other, shifting positions and perspectives. This idea is also embodied by the freely accessible play space BAUBAU, developed by the artist Kerstin Brätsch. It invites children to spread out, be loud, romp around, and constantly reshape the spaces – because here, more is allowed than forbidden.
