About
ifa-Galerie Berlin is the Berlin exhibition venue of the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, or ifa, Germany's oldest intermediary organisation for international cultural relations, which marked its centenary in 2017. Located on Linienstrasse in Berlin Mitte, the gallery works alongside its sister venue, the ifa-Galerie Stuttgart, as one of two spaces through which the institute presents contemporary art, architecture and design to the German public, with a particular focus on artistic positions from Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, and Germany's own touring exhibitions abroad.
The ifa itself was established in the early twentieth century and existed until August 1997 as a public law institution, at which point it was restructured as a registered association governed by a general assembly, an executive board and a secretariat general. This long institutional history situates the ifa-Galerie Berlin within a broader mission that predates most of Germany's contemporary art infrastructure, one rooted in the conviction that cultural exchange can foster mutual understanding between societies, particularly in periods of tension or conflict, and can lay the groundwork for durable international partnerships.
The institute's programming is organised around three core competencies, art, research and civil society, through which it builds long term, globally networked collaborations rather than one off projects. Within the art programme, the ifa maintains an extensive collection developed over decades, and its exhibitions frequently engage directly with this collection, inviting contemporary artists to research, respond to and recontextualise historical holdings alongside new work. The institute is also entrusted with a number of significant national responsibilities, including organising the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, underscoring its standing within Germany's cultural diplomacy infrastructure.
Curatorially, the ifa-Galerie Berlin has developed a trajectory attentive to questions of memory, migration, identity and belonging, often presenting group exhibitions that bring together artists from different geographies and generations around shared thematic concerns, complemented by research based exhibition projects examining chapters of art history embedded in international cultural politics, such as its recent collaborative project on the exhibition work of the former German Democratic Republic's Centre for Art Exhibitions. Public programming, including guided tours and artist talks, regularly accompanies these presentations, and admission to the gallery is free.
Organisationally, the ifa's core pillars are its exhibition and touring programme, its funding and fellowship schemes supporting cultural and artistic professionals, and its dialogue initiatives connecting civil society actors internationally, including support for non governmental projects in crisis regions and for German minority communities in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The institute is funded by the Federal Foreign Office, the State of Baden-Wurttemberg and the state capital Stuttgart, a funding structure that reflects its dual role as both a Stuttgart based headquarters and a nationally significant actor in Germany's foreign cultural and educational policy.
