BBA Gallery

BBA Gallery began not as a conventional commercial gallery but as an artist run curatorial platform, launched in Berlin in 2015 by artists Renata Kudlacek and Vishal Shah with the ambition of doing more than simply showing work. From the outset, the founders set out to challenge how contemporary art is thought about and encountered, an ambition that led, in 2017, to the platform's formal establishment as BBA Gallery, now co directed by Kudlacek and Shah and based on Kopenicker Strasse in Berlin.

As an artist led space, BBA Gallery has built its identity around discovering and supporting strong contemporary voices across a wide range of media, positioning itself deliberately at the intersection of the art market and artistic experimentation. The gallery states explicitly that age, formal education and conventional career trajectories are not its primary criteria for representation, placing greater weight instead on authenticity, perseverance, professionalism and the quality of the work itself, an approach that has shaped its reputation as a genuinely accessible entry point into Berlin's gallery scene for emerging and mid career artists from around the world.

Central to the gallery's contemporary importance is its prize programme, known today as the BBA Prizes, encompassing both an Artist Prize and a Photography Prize. Conceived as more than a simple award, the prizes function as a structured entry point into an international art network, connecting shortlisted and winning artists to a lasting relationship with the gallery that extends well beyond a single exhibition. Many prize participants go on to take part in group shows, represent the gallery at international art fairs, and eventually receive solo exhibitions, with the programme deliberately built around long term nurturing of talent rather than one off recognition. Winning exhibitions have taken place at venues including the historic Kuhlhaus Berlin, a heritage industrial building at Gleisdreieck, reflecting the scale the prizes have grown to command.

The gallery marked its tenth anniversary as a curatorial initiative in 2025 with a landmark exhibition spanning three floors of the Kuhlhaus, a milestone that reflected on a decade of work supporting artists, many of whom come from non traditional backgrounds and benefit particularly from the networking support the gallery offers alongside exhibition opportunities.

Curatorially, BBA Gallery bridges traditional and technologically driven forms of artistic expression, championing bold and diverse positions and placing artists and their individual visions at the centre of its programming, guided by a stated ethos of inclusivity. Its core organisational pillars rest on this combination of an ongoing exhibition programme, its internationally oriented prize initiatives, and its longer term artist representation and development work.

As a privately run, artist led gallery, BBA Gallery is funded through the commercial sale of represented artists' work together with prize entry fees and event based income, a model that has allowed it to maintain independence while building an increasingly international profile within Berlin's contemporary art landscape over the past decade.
