Open Call: Inside-Out Art Museum Residency 2027
Mondriaan Fond

The Inside-Out Art Museum residency offers artists and cultural professionals the opportunity to further develop their practice within one of the leading independent platforms for contemporary art and research in Beijing. The museum brings together exhibitions, critical inquiry, and public programs, thereby creating space for in-depth exploration, experimentation, and exchange.
For whom
The residency at Inside-Out Art Museum can be applied for by visual artists, curators, and critics. In the case of applications from duos or collaborations, each individual must submit a separate application.
A duo is defined as: 2 artists, 2 curators/viewers, or a combination thereof who structurally create work together. Collaborative groups can be considered (occasional) duos if they submit a joint plan for the work period that leads to a single result. Additionally, a duo must live and work together in the same space during the residency. Please note: both individuals must submit a separate application.
Work period
There is 1 work period of 3 months available:
March 1 – May 30, 2027
IOAM applies a flexible model for the residency that takes into account the applicant's other obligations. IOAM coordinates the residency schedule with the selected candidate. The residency starts in March and lasts three months. The start date is determined by IOAM in consultation with the resident.
In the application form, you can indicate your preference for the work period. We will try to take this preference into account as much as possible. There is room for one artist or duo per period.
How many?
The Mondriaan Fund makes a contribution of €8,478 available for an artist and €5,622 for a curator or critic, as a contribution towards travel and material costs and living expenses.
This amount is intended for one person. In addition, a personal contribution of 10% is expected from the selected resident. The Mondriaan Fund automatically deducts this from the final contribution. You do not need to do anything for this.
The costs for the rent of the studio and living space, and for the support that residents of Inside-Out Art Museum receive, are paid directly to Inside-Out Art Museum by the Mondriaan Fund. The apartment is highly suitable for duos or partnerships.
If a duo or partnership is selected for the residency, the total amount will be increased proportionally to cover the additional travel and accommodation costs of the second applicant.
The contribution to residents established in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom may be increased to cover any higher travel costs. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
To request
The deadline for submitting an application for a work period in 2027 is Thursday, August 27, 2026, before 4:00 PM (Netherlands time zone) / 10:00 AM (Caribbean time zone).
Before submitting an application, read the Residency explanation for the conditions , assessment , and application procedure .
Also read the general terms and conditions that apply to contributions from the Mondriaan Fund.
Selection
The selection is made with the assistance of an advisory committee. Based on the submitted documents, the advisory committee nominates candidates to Inside-Out Art Museum. They select the final participants for the residency. An interview may be part of their selection procedure.*
In the case of two applications for two different residencies, the quality and development of your oeuvre/(work) practice and the quality of your cultural entrepreneurship as an artist, curator, or observer will be assessed only once. This assessment is therefore valid for both applications.
Please note! Keep in mind that the processing time for this selection procedure may be longer than three months.
Other contributions for residencies at home and abroad.
Because only a limited number of residency places are available per round, many applicants will be disappointed. We would therefore like to draw your attention to the possibility of applying for an Artist Project for a residency. The residency for which you apply must not have been offered under the Mondriaan Fund's Residency scheme.
