Open Call: de Appel Kiosk Summer 2026

de Appel Amsterdam

Amsterdam, The Netherlands
15. April 2026

de Appel is welcoming proposals for the upcoming summer edition of its market Kiosk. As part of de Appel’s structural thematics in the coming years, we will explore alternative small-scale economies and art economies, engaging both with specific sites, such as street markets, and with broader questions of funding and institutional autonomy.

Through the de Appel Kiosk endeavour, we reflect on practices of exchange and barter in market economies. We see urban markets as vibrant places where diverse cultures gather, becoming hubs for social interaction, community building and cultural exchange. Street markets are often organised around small, family-run or cooperative stalls, fostering social solidarity among stall owners.

By engaging in contexts and places outside of art institutions, de Appel seeks to meet people through and with artistic practices, without an overt distinction between art and society. The idea of the Kiosk was inspired by our friends in the lumbung and by other initiatives from artists to sustain their collectives and participate in a wider scope of economies.

During its second edition in 2025, three proposals were selected from an open call: Social B̶a̶n̶k̶ by artist Saemundur Thor Helgason is a functional artwork that offers an alternative to profit-driven banks, offering interest-free loans to visitors of the market. Artists Honey Jones-Hughes and Antonio de la Hera developed Buurtijs (2020–22), a previous project that questioned ‘local’ and ‘ethical’ food production by making and selling ice cream. de aardAppel, run by artists Özgür Atlagan and Ulufer Çelic, was a hybrid stall consisting of a micro-publishing studio and a potato salad kiosk. You can find more information about the projects here and a commissioned article by Thomas Siderius here.

For our upcoming edition in spring/summer 2026, de Appel is seeking artists or collectives based in the Netherlands to develop a project for our stall in the market. The project should respond to questions about street market and/or art economy, and engage with the users of the market. Since we are aware of the timeline constraints, we encourage you to think of already developed works which could be adapted to the market context. It can take shape in any form you see fit (performance, workshops, printmaking, talks, objects, play, video etc.), but please keep in mind a limited production budget.
