The “Barcelona Crea Grants – Creative Factories 2026” are an initiative of the Network of Creative Factories, with the support of the Barcelona Institute of Culture, to support the pre-production processes that accompany the creation of artistic proposals: conceptualization, gestation, research, experimentation, documentation and essay. These grants seek to contribute to maintaining the cultural and scientific momentum of the city by offering resources to develop processes of artistic research and innovation.
Founded in 1997, Hangar is an artistic governance project that aims to maintain—that is, generate, update, revise, repair, and sustain—the conditions necessary to facilitate artistic production and research, understanding them as practices and forms of critical speculation that have the capacity to respond to contemporary debates and emergencies. Hangar understands art as a knowledge-producing practice and, therefore, defends artistic research as a research modality in its own right, endowed with a specific modality of discovery and production of knowledge. Experimentation with unconventional methodologies, leaps of mastery from scientific or technological fields, and openness to new ways of documenting and sharing work processes are fundamental to the center's ecosystem.
Hangar is offering a Barcelona Crea – Fàbriques de Creació 2026 grant to support an artist or researcher from any field in carrying out an artistic research process focused specifically on methodological experimentation. With this grant, the center provides the beneficiary with the budget, space and appropriate support conditions for the development of a proposal that explores and implements unconventional research methodologies, contributing to their dissemination in a professional environment. The selected proposal will be carried out at Hangar during a five-month residency, between May and September 2026.
1. Objectives The Hangar methodological experimentation grant investigates possible ways to structure, model and make artistic research practices replicable. It seeks to understand how intuitions or sensitive learning are transformed into methodologies transferable to other languages or fields of knowledge. At the same time, it investigates the limits or excesses that arise from paradigms that seek to maximize the transparency of practices, detecting what cannot be modeled, what, due to its uniqueness, resists being replicated and sometimes requests to remain hidden in order to be protected. Therefore, the general objective of the program is to promote the documentation, systematization and publication of unconventional modes of research that incorporate an operational reflection on their own scope, contributing to the characterization of the notion of artistic knowledge.
2. Benefits and allowance
Hangar will make available to the beneficiary: – Fees: €6,000 gross, which will include the purchase of all the materials necessary for the research. – Conceptual and technical support for the proposal. – A workspace at the center. – Access to tools and common spaces. – Hangar will support the dissemination and public presentation of the project within the framework of one of the center's public programs. – These grants do not cover travel expenses from the place of residence to the center, nor accommodation or subsistence expenses.
