The Exhibitions Director serves as a chief creative executive of Gallery 263, leading the oversight, planning, and execution of all exhibitions and programming. This includes direct communication with all artists and jurors in order to produce and install roughly 10 exhibitions each year, ranging artist proposals to juried shows and community exhibitions. At least one exhibition is curated directly by the Exhibitions Director on behalf of Gallery 263.
The Exhibitions Director is also responsible for coordinating with artists regarding artwork shipment, pricing, and sales. This individual maintains the exhibition schedule, coordinates with jurors and curators, organizes panel discussions, artist talks, and other events. The Exhibitions Director is also a public facing leader, often speaking at such offerings while cultivating local partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
Exhibition Management
Leads the oversight, planning, and execution of all public exhibitions and associated programs
Assists in planning and promotion of receptions, events, artist talks, and workshops.
Communicates directly with all artists and jurors regarding selection, delivery, shipping, installation, updates, and communications about artwork included in gallery exhibitions.
Coordinates with volunteers interested in supporting installation or deinstallation of exhibitions.
Creates and installs wall labels, adjusts gallery lighting, and collaborates with artists regarding the installation and handling of their artwork.
Leads effective planning meetings and discussions around juried exhibitions, open calls, and curatorial proposals.
Leads teams of guest jurors and co-organizers to shape exhibitions and prepare and finalize exhibition materials, including illustrated checklists, project descriptions, and artist communications.
Project Management
Develops and maintains exhibitions calendar for each year, subject to input from other directors and board leadership
Ensures project schedules are created and regularly updated for each exhibition, that milestones are identified and tracked, and that any issues that may arise are addressed to avoid impact on project timeline and budget.
Collaborates with the Communications Director regarding editing and finalizing press releases, website pages, and postcards for exhibitions.
Fulfills at least one gallery sitting weekend afternoon shift (Saturday and/or Sunday from 1:00-4:00 PM) each week.
Assists with routine maintenance including regular cleaning and organization of the gallery and facilities.
Works with gallery staff to ensure efficient gallery operations including requesting needed supplies, organization of artwork and gallery equipment, and support in preparing for events hosted by the gallery.
Organizational Support
Collaborates in strategic planning with staff and board regarding fundraising strategies and organizational outreach to support the long term goals of the gallery.
Attends bi-weekly virtual staff meetings and quarterly in person board meetings.
Independently visits regional art galleries, museums, and art events to observe trends, potential partners, and insights on how to improve and maintain the galleries position in the Boston area art community.
Develops relationships with other non-profit organizations, art communities, local organizations and creative communities to understand and bolster the local landscape of art and creative culture.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation: Gallery 263 will pay you a gross compensation of one thousand, three-hundred and eighty dollars ($1,380) per month ($16,500 on an annual basis) payable as earned at Gallery 263's regular pay periods. This compensation assumes a 15 hour work week. This is a 1099 (independent contractor) position, taxes will not be withheld.
Vacation: You will be entitled to the month of August as paid vacation and the last two weeks of December as paid vacation.
Holiday Bonus: $100 for each year worked with a cap of $500.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree or exhibitions management certification a plus.
Minimum 1-3 years of experience in museums/galleries, arts administration, or a related field.
Proven success in art handling, curation, and project management.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Experience managing staff, volunteers, and budgets.
Proficiency in Google Workspace, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, and Excel.
Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends for gallery or community events.
Passion for the arts, community engagement, and nonprofit work.
A sense of humor and enthusiasm for collaboration.
